Chardecum History

Page history last edited by Shieldhaven 1 year, 7 months ago

The following records were gathered by Syrell Silversluck and are available at the guildhall of the Gallant Shields.

1567 KR Present day. Vyrion Silvercrow is the Reeve. The Council of Chardecum continues to debate and refine plans for a new, post-revolutionary city and the election of a new reeve. The fortunes of the Silvergrove family go into steep decline, and the Goldhawk family's holdings in the city have been seized.

1566 KR Lady Mara resigns her post in protest of the Prince's and provincial governor's actions. A military governor arrives to invest the city. Later in the year, the angel Douma is slain in Count Emrion's Plaza and the military occupation is driven out.

1565 KR Lady Mara Desponet is the Reeve. Significant noble families include Barrigo, Silvergrove, Ironspar, Goldhawk, Desponet, and Cabanellas. Chartered mercenary companies include the Gallant Shields and the Grand Escuderos.

1558 KR The last reported attack by Alarra the pirate takes place in this year, in which she captures and scuttles the Keening Wind, a ship owned by the Ironspar family.

1555 KR The Prince of Grevanda exposes a Gallmontain spy, placed high within his court. This begins a long period of hostility, though not open warfare, with Gallmonte. Earthquakes are felt in every province of Tyrema in this year.

1539 KR Beruch arrive in the port of Chardecum. Some of their ships, damaged in the voyage, have not left their moorings in the harbor since.

1538 KR Princess Rivay disappears under mysterious circumstances as part of a royal progress on Sandpiper Island. When she is not found for a year and a day, she is declared dead without heir, and noble electors pass the crown to Prince Adalar of the Montalvo family - the first human to rule Tyrema or Southwind since its founding.

1537 KR The course of the Ollent River shifts, and what was once riverbed becomes the Fallows of Chardecum. It becomes home to the desperately poor.

1529 KR The infamous pirate Alarra begins her career in this year, capturing numerous merchant vessels near Chardecum and pillaging coastal settlements. Though the price on her head grows and grows, she never fails to evade Grevandan frigates.

1497 KR A plague known as sunrise fever (as it made sufferers especially sensitive to sunlight, and came from Sunrise Point) spreads into Chardecum. It affects humans, but not kagandi or veytikka.

1494 KR The Princess Lilia dies at the age of 84, and is succeeded by Princess Rivay. Rivay is particularly well loved in Chardecum, as she eases the city's tax burden and reforms a corrupt bureaucracy.

1473 KR The last of the three wizards who made up the original Gallant Shields cabal dies in a mission to explore the Sunken City of Adeirra. Due to legal complications, the Company's new charter is far less advantageous, and carries an annual fee.

1461 KR The Congress of Lirane formally ends the fighting that has ravaged Balioth. The Princess's claim to Tyrema Ridge is recognized over all others, and she breaks her promises to Master and Lady Sapphire (now the son and daughter-in-law of the ones who carried out the First Occupation). The Congress confirms Tyreman claims to the provinces of Sunrise Point and Sandpiper Island. Noroth becomes the first Grand Duke of Gallmonte.

1458 KR The Second Occupation ends at last, as the Princess of Grevanda secures new allies on Sandpiper Island and blockades Chardecum by land and sea. Beaumarchais surrenders her colors and is held prisoner in Grevanda for the next three years.

1454 KR The Second Occupation: The Grand Duke of Eldion names the Baronne Alexine Beaumarchais the provincial governor of occupied Tyrema Ridge. She is famously merciless, repeatedly crushing resistance cells almost immediately after their creation and publicly dismembering the families of all involved.

1453 KR Having seized the province of Sunrise Point, the Princess relocates to Grevanda, as it is considerably safer from the deployment of Eldenna forces at the time. Following a series of losses, she withdraws all defenders from Adeschon and Chardecum, leaving only irregular forces in Shale Pass and in the foothills. The Grand Duke of Eldion invests Adeschon and Chardecum at the end of the year.

1449 KR Eldion sends ambassadors to Chardecum to negotiate an end to the war. They die under mysterious circumstances. Investigations into the matter fail to exonerate the Princess of Adeschon's senior advisor, causing a scandal that inspires the Sovereign Knights of the Council Fire and other Kaldeshari factions to enter the war on Eldion's side.

1443 KR Eldion initiates a maritime blockade of Chardecum and Adeschon. The Prince of Adeschon is killed when his flagship sinks, and the Tyreman crown passes to his daughter Lilia. She proves to be a cannier diplomat than the Eldenna anticipated. She buys off Master and Lady Sapphire, who begin long-range raids into Eldion. The Gallant Shields, supported by the Honorable Order of Shipwrights, overcome a number of setbacks and begin successful blockade-running.

1442 KR After negotiations with the Prince of Adeschon, Chardecum bends the knee in exchange for certain privileges for the Society for Alchemical Refinement and other guilds. The Gallant Shields become a chartered mercenary company, receiving letters of marque and reprisal for the duration of hostilities against Eldion. This begins the phase of the fighting known as the War of Red Sails.

1441 KR Master and Lady Sapphire escape capture, fleeing the city and reuniting with their forces in the field. The coalition of sellswords, wizards, and alchemists begins to fray almost instantly, as the alchemists insist on inviting the Prince of Adeschon to resume rule over the city, the Gallant Shields wait to see which way the wind blows, and the sellswords want to rule Chardecum as an independent city-state. At the end of autumn of this year, Master and Lady Sapphire besiege the city, but are driven back by a renewed alliance. The mercenaries suffer catastrophic losses, however, and after the battle they pass into the direct control of the Gallant Shields.

1440 KR The First Occupation: The war with Eldion is disastrous for both sides, but particularly for Tyrema Ridge, as a stateless army commanded by Master and Lady Sapphire seize Chardecum without a significant fight; without an army present, the city elders elect to open the gates to them. They sack the city, seizing hundreds of thousands of silver maravedis and an equal value of magical goods. A number of things bricked eighty years earlier are reopened, and innocent civilians in the city are forced to explore the passages and hand over everything they find. Shortly after, the arcane cabal known as the Gallant Shields enters into a secret alliance with the Society for Alchemical Refinement. Pooling their resources, they hire sellswords to bring about the overthrow of Master and Lady Sapphire.

1434 KR The war that began as Tarimel's Defiance in Eksoris spreads throughout Balioth; in this year it reaches the province of Tyrema Ridge, which goes to war with its northern neighbor, the domain of Eldion. The exact causes of the war are unclear, but in the modern day, most Tyremans believe that the Grand Duke of Eldion, Noroth, was manipulated by the priests dwelling in the Abbey of the Immortal Saint.

1420 KR The massive statue known as Sioctana in Green is discovered in this year. The poor of Chardecum give offerings at the statue, a practice that continues to the present day.

1416 KR The colonial governer of Southwind, Lorien Silverwave, begins to style himself the Prince of Adeschon, following the abrupt end of Sestomeran support for colonies throughout Balioth.

1411 KR A group of kagandi alchemists receives a charter from the colonial governor of Adeschon to create the Society for Alchemical Refinement. They build their guildhall in the ruins of what must have once been a fantastically wealthy private residence (notably, it is sized for Gorgrom).

1366 KR Gorgrom hordes come pouring out of the mountains of Tyrema Ridge. Only at the walls of the city are they finally turned back; half a dozen smaller inland settlements burn to the ground.

1360 KR The Founding of Chardecum: Colonists from Galkath, under the command of Tomas Silverwave, discover a ruined city and build a permanent settlement on its foundations. It is part of the province of Tyrema Ridge; Tyrema Ridge and Highsails are the two provinces that make up the domain of Southwind. Details of the initial exploration of the city are sparse, but according to legend the explorers plastered over and bricked up a number of discoveries.

1359 KR First arrival of Sestomeran colonists from the south.
