Louthlin

Page history last edited by Shieldhaven 9 years ago

Founding: 1461 KR, at the Congress of Lirane

Ruler: Her Grace Prudence Elizabeth Bondeville, Marchioness of Louthlin

Capital: Field Marshal's Keep

Louthlin is a sparsely-populated domain of two provinces: Yarrowgreen and Barda Riga. Only two settlements in the whole domain exceed a thousand subjects: the Field Marshal's Keep in Yarrowgreen, and Avel Riga in Barda Riga. It was a frontier of Sestomeran conquest in the early decades of settlement, and the site of several of the bloodiest battles against the Gorgrom. In later years, it became a primary battlefield of Baliothan continental wars, and most recently, it was in Yarrowgreen that Parthala faced Solomon Edrall, Tagraz, and their foul army with her own tiny band of Parthé. The devastation of that battle remains evident to this day.

Louthlin itself was not a domain for much of the past two centuries, as its provinces changed hands among its more powerful neighbors. Now it is a breadbasket for those neighbors.

There is also an "industry" of scavengers picking over forgotten battlefields, mass graves, and half-buried ruins. Trade in these goods is nominally restricted, but Her Grace, the Marchioness of Louthlin, has not been able to bring an effective end to it. Some suggest that this is because her agents accept payment in kind.

A schola of exorcists, the Reformed Order of the Soul Wardens, has established itself in the Field Marshal's Keep and, to a lesser extent, in Avel Riga. Many of the demons that Solomon Edrall brought into the world through the Stone of Torment were dispersed, but not slain; the Reformed Order opposes all demonic and diabolic influence within Aurikesh, but their central mission is tracking down and banishing, binding, or slaying the hundreds of demons that survived the battle and scattered across Balioth. They have amassed a sizable collection of scrolls and codices on the demonic powers (one of the few such storehouses of knowledge on that topic in Balioth), including some demons that yet remain outside of Aurikesh.

There are other priestly scholae within the domain as well, and I'll name them if it ever matters.

Louthlin names are typically Anglo-Norman in sound, with some Saxon influences. Owing to its history of changing hands, however, there are many cultural influences of lesser impact, and names from every domain might be heard on the streets of the Field Marshal's Keep.
