Halflings in Athral Isle

A hundred or so halflings have settled permanently in Fallcrest, as in many towns, and they are a common sight in Athral Isle. Other halflings maintain the river trade in their skiffs and barges, but they find much less work nowadays.

Significant Settlements

  • Malden – This city, in the western breadbasket counties of the Isle, is governed by the humans in theory, but its de facto rulers are the council of halfling elders. Humans built the city on top of ruins, so that tunnels remain close to the surface. The halflings cleared out those tunnels and rebuilt them for their own tastes. Now the halfling city of Malden (pop. 1200) sits about two feet beneath the human town by the same name (pop. 3500).

  • Tanalassa – Tanalassa is more than just a fleet of skiffs and barges, but everyone knows towns don’t move. As long as they are in contact with someone who knows, halflings can generally guess the location of Tanalassa at any given time to within ten or fifteen miles. The city-fleet of some 600 souls travels the rivers and swamps of the Isle at no more than a few miles a day. Locals generally regard the arrival of Tanalassa as an excuse to break out the good beer… or double-lock their doors.

  • Conwarashire – This village of humans and halflings thrives on herding sheep on rocky hillsides, and growing herbs in the rich soil of its valleys. Ten years ago, Hanno Whitby became the Mayor and Protector of Conwarashire in recognition of his service to the Crown. No one is exactly sure what that service might have been, including the newly-crowned king.
